INSURGENT/WARRIOR
7 years in a combat zone as a fighting unit commander during the Algerian war—1954-1962.
General Norton A. Schwartz, the former U.S. Air Force Chief of Staff, summarizes that part of my life and my contribution to the U.S. fight against insurgencies and terrorism (The Brookings Institution) in the following YouTube videos:

Part 1 of General Schwartz’s speech about my expertise in insurgency and my contribution to irregular warfare

Transcript of General Norton A. Schwartz’s Speech

The Insurgent Among Us captures insurgency evolution from its inception to its resolution, shedding light on its strengths and weaknesses from the inside. This account also shows the reader what it really means to be an insurgent. It is neither a larger-than-life romantic epic nor the glorified revolutionary of communist propaganda, but the account of an average man thrown into an extraordinary situation. I wrote The Insurgent Among Us to convey the power and drama of the insurgency. It is a powerful book, as authentic as any, heartrending and true, exciting and brutally tragic. It is an absolutely authentic portrayal of the insurgency experience as I lived it. I cover one aspect of warfare, as well as the common torment of French and Algerians, from 1954 to 1962. It took place in an environment similar to the contemporary Middle East—a multiethnic, Arab, Muslim country. The Insurgent Among Us details my exclusive and active personal involvement as a leader in the Algerian insurgency, as an officer in the French counterinsurgency, and as a cabalist of the Organisation Armée Secrète (OAS, Secret Army Organization) sedition.
